7.3 magnitude earthquake hits Chile, USGS says | World News

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Chilean city of Antofagasta on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck 265 kilometres (160 miles) east of the coastal city of Antofagasta at a depth of 128 kilometres.

The quake struck at 9:51 p.m. (local time) and there were no immediate reports of damage.

No tsunami warning has been issued yet, according to Agence France-Presse.

In January, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Tarapacá region of northern Chile at a depth of 118 km. No damage was reported at the time.

Chile is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. It lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a seismically volatile area where many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur on land.

The country has experienced some of the world's most powerful earthquakes recorded, including a record-breaking 9.5 magnitude quake in 1960 in the southern city of Valdivia.

In 2010, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami killed more than 500 people.
