Why did the Missouri National Guard recently conduct New Madrid earthquake drills?

If you were in the St. Louis, Missouri area earlier this week, you may have seen National Guard troops on the streets and wondered what was going on. There was no reason to worry, there was a very good reason they were wrecking vehicles and setting up emergency tents. They were training for a massive earthquake in New Madrid. Wait. What?

The best coverage I saw of what the Missouri National Guard was doing this week was by KSDK in St. Louis. It was an operation where metropolitan area first responders and the Missouri National Guard simulated a response to a major earthquake.

The best comment I've seen on YouTube so far on sharing this video was this:

“I heard StL wrote them all their parking tickets.” Funny and well done, but it’s not really funny.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources now says there’s a 10 percent chance the state will experience a magnitude 7 or greater earthquake in the next 50 years. That would obviously be catastrophic, but there’s a much higher chance that a major magnitude 6 quake could cause significant damage. The estimate is as high as 25 percent that Missouri will experience an earthquake of that magnitude in the next 30 years.

It's a great idea for the Missouri National Guard and First Responders to not only have a plan in place, but also to do a drill to get hands-on experience of how to respond to an earthquake in Missouri. A real disaster can happen without warning and change our lives forever.
