Aquarium damaged by Jan. 1 quake reopens in central Japan

An aquarium in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, has reopened about six months after a powerful earthquake devastated the area on Jan. 1 this year.

The reopening ceremony of the Notojima Aquarium in Nanao City was held on Saturday.

The facility was forced to suspend operations after its equipment and water distribution pipes were damaged. About 4,000 animals were killed in the quake, including whale sharks, which were popular with visitors.

As reconstruction efforts progress, penguins, sea turtles and other animals that were evacuated have been returned to other facilities.

Aquarium officials said the dolphins and sea lions are staying at their evacuation sites to avoid being moved in the summer heat.

Until the dolphin and sea lion shows resume, a discounted admission fee of 1,000 yen, or about $6, applies to high school students and older. Younger visitors can enter for free.

People with children were seen taking pictures. One visitor with a child said she was happy to reopen the pool, which they used to come every month before the earthquake. She added that she wanted to see the facility restored to its original condition.

Aquarium manager Sakaidani Hitoshi says he's happy to see visitors enjoying themselves. He says he and his staff want to do more to fully restore operations.
