Greece: Earthquake hits west of Crete

An earthquake struck west of the tourist island of Crete. According to preliminary measurements by the Geodynamic Institute in the Greek capital, the quake measured 5.3 on the Richter scale and occurred at 7.02 a.m. local time (6.02 a.m. CEST). The epicenter was about 18 kilometers (11 miles) below the seabed and about 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of the island's southern coast near the small coastal town of Paleochora.

This was preceded by several smaller earthquakes in the area. Civil defense initially did not say whether there were any casualties or damage to buildings, for example. No tsunami warning was issued.

“We are monitoring the phenomenon and we cannot yet say whether this is the main earthquake,” seismologist Gerasimos Chouliaras told Greek radio. Local media reported that there were no initial reports of casualties. However, many people were woken up. The radio reported that the quake was felt in large parts of Crete.

The African and European plates meet under the seafloor south of Crete, causing frequent strong earthquakes.
