Bulgarian firefighters brace as Greek wildfires approach border; earthquake hits Crete – Novinite.com
The fires in Greece have now reached within a kilometer of the Bulgarian border. Overnight, firefighters were stationed at the border to prevent the fire from crossing into Bulgaria. The fire on Mount Slavyanka is dangerously close to the border. Firefighters and forestry officials are working near the villages of Petrovo and Golechevo in Sandanski, setting up firebreaks and clearing vegetation.
The main concern is the winds that are fueling the fire, which could cross into Bulgaria by the afternoon and threaten the Ali Botosh Forest Reserve. Greek helicopters are constantly flying overhead, dropping water on the fire. The area is so impenetrable that the fire is being fought only from the air. Locals told our team that years ago, a similar fire broke out on the mountain, and only aerial equipment could be used due to the presence of landmines, making it extremely dangerous for firefighters on the ground.
Bulgarian firefighters and foresters are clearing vegetation and debris that could catch fire. An excavator is also being used to create clearings along the border. “We are creating the longest possible section to provide protection tomorrow or if necessary for firefighters. If the fire gets too close, we will start counter-fire to stop it. The nearest village is Golichevo, about a kilometer away. The danger lies in the pine plantations, where the resin burns very quickly,” explained Stoyko Velianov of the State Forest Service “Katuntsi”.
Residents of Golichevo are worried and ready to either help fight the fire or evacuate if necessary, as our team found out during conversations with them.
Since early morning, employees of the Katuntsi and Gotsi Delchev state forest farms have been working in the border area of Mount Slavyanka. The fire has been burning on Greek territory since yesterday, about 1-1.5 kilometers from the Bulgarian border. Bulgarian foresters, using specialized equipment, are clearing grass and low vegetation to create clearings that could prevent the fire from spreading to Bulgaria. The director of the Katuntsi state forestry, Plamen Boyukov, explained that the Greek side is fighting the fire with two helicopters, while the Bulgarian side is preparing for any possible spread.
Efforts to prevent the fires from spreading into Bulgaria have been ongoing since 5 a.m., with Bulgarian forestry officials working hard to clear the area. Boyukov expressed hope that the clearing operations would be effective if the fires moved towards the Bulgarian border.
A powerful earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale has struck the island of Crete, alarming residents and tourists alike. The quake was felt on the island, prompting many tourists to spend the night on the beach. Seismologists have warned that aftershocks may not necessarily be weaker, and the Greek Civil Defense has urged everyone to remain alert over the next two days. Meanwhile, meteorologists are predicting a slight drop in temperatures starting tomorrow.
In northern Greece, near the city of Preveza, the fire has been partially contained, with firefighters, military units and volunteers working at the scene. Similarly, near the city of Serres, the fire, which burned farmland but spared homes, has been partially brought under control with the help of planes and helicopters. Several fire brigades remain in the area as temperatures continue to soar to around 42 degrees Celsius.
The situation in Pella has improved significantly, with all fires under control after four days of intensive efforts, according to the Civil Defense. Currently, there are no active fires in the northern part of Greece near the border with Bulgaria. Due to the high risk of fires, police and army units are guarding forest areas.
Today, there is a risk of fires in Greece, as temperatures remain around 42 degrees. The fire near the city of Serres is being closely monitored, and efforts to extinguish the fire continue with the participation of planes and helicopters. The affected agricultural area has seen significant damage, but no houses have been damaged.
