Türkiye-Syria earthquake: Sisters of NS man struggle to survive

Ibrahim Al-Ali is torn as his sisters in Syria and Turkey struggle to survive in the aftermath of Monday's earthquake.

“My mom is always crying and worried about her watching the news or talking to her,” says Ali. “Sometimes she can talk to her but there are times when the internet doesn’t work.”

More than 22,000 people have been killed in the region since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck.

Although Ali's sister in Syria is among a group that has also lost their homes, he says it is his sister in Turkey he worries about most.

“If they could find a place to live, we could arrange for them. But they live on the street with their children. The oldest is 14.”

Al-Ali said that since the disaster, his sisters have not had access to any shelter, blankets or food.

“There is not much help there because there are so many people. They go to the mosque to stay there and even [if] They must have a shelter or tent, and must have a group of 16 people. [in total]”.”

Al-Ali's sister, Lina, who lives in Turkey, is also five months pregnant, and said she has not received any support.

“I spoke to them and told them that we hear on the news that the government is helping and they are not. They have no blankets. They have nothing,” Al-Ali said.

What made matters worse, Ali added, was that discrimination against Syrians living in Turkey had increased during this period of crisis. He recalled that his sister told him that while they were seeking shelter in a mosque, others seeking help told them to go back to their country.

“The Syrians say: Why are you giving them food? Why are you giving them water? You should give it to us. This is our country.”

A few years ago, Ali applied to sponsor his sister in Turkey but her application was denied. Ali is now looking into other programs to help her get to Canada as quickly as possible.

He hopes the government will reconsider its request.

Federal Immigration Minister Sean Fraser has indicated that the government may work to expedite immigration applications to Canada from people living in earthquake zones.

The Canadian government sent a disaster assessment team to the area on Wednesday to determine what additional assistance is needed.
