Two earthquakes hit central Lake Tahoe

A screenshot taken from the Nevada Seismological Laboratory map on Sunday morning shows a cluster of earthquakes in central Lake Tahoe that occurred over a 24-hour period.

A series of about 40 earthquakes, centered in central Lake Tahoe, began around 7 a.m. Saturday and has continued over the past 24 hours.

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory said the quake measured 3.2 on the Richter scale at around 8 p.m. Saturday.

About 20 people were reported to have felt the quake, most of them in areas surrounding the lake.

The latest quake, measuring 0.08 on the Richter scale, struck at 6:20 a.m. Sunday.

Most earthquakes of less than magnitude 3.0 cannot be detected by people.

There are three active faults along the bottom of Lake Tahoe, but most earthquakes appear to be concentrated over the Stateline Fault.

They all lie parallel to the Genoa Fault along the base of the Carson Range.

According to a research paper by the California Geological Survey, the West Tahoe Fault, which runs along the western side of the lake, is most likely to trigger a tsunami if it moves during an earthquake.
