Ministry of Energy completes seismic tests on spent nuclear fuel storage systems

Researchers at the University of California San Diego conducted tests using a specialized outdoor shake table to simulate different seismic events.

The test involved a full-size, 125-ton vertical barrel and a 111-ton horizontal storage system. Each was equipped with dummy fuel assemblies and more than 240 sensors to collect data on nearly 40 different seismic simulations.

The data will be used to assess the effects of potential seismic events on spent nuclear fuel cladding, and to provide information for the design and licensing of future spent nuclear fuel storage systems. The data will also help improve current practices and ensure the safe, efficient and sustainable management of spent nuclear fuel in the country.
