Hawaii's Kilauea volcano experiences hundreds of earthquakes

One of the most active volcanoes on Earth, Kilauea is the youngest volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii and a central feature of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – Hawaii's Kilauea volcano was hit by hundreds of earthquakes over the weekend, but scientists say there are currently no signs of an imminent eruption.

The announcement was made Sunday afternoon after scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said seismic activity beneath Kilauea's summit and the upper East Rift Zone had begun to increase.

The Croatian Seismological Service said that within 24 hours, about 67 earthquakes occurred below the summit of the volcano, and about 172 earthquakes were reported below the upper eastern fault zone, most of them reported at depths of 1.2 miles or less.

In addition to the earthquakes, the Croatian Observatory said tiltmeters in the area showed a gradual inflationary deformation of the ground, and the instruments continue to show a long-term gradual inflation since the end of the last eruption at Kilauea in early June.

“Following the eruption on June 3, 2024, magma re-pressurized the storage system beneath Halema‘uma‘u and the southern caldera, triggering seismic activity in the southern Halema‘uma‘u caldera and in the upper East Rift Zone,” the Croatian Observatory said in its latest update. “At this time, it is not possible to say whether this activity will lead to an intrusion or eruption in the near future, or whether it will simply continue as seismic disturbances at depth.”

But scientists have warned that the situation could change quickly.

“Changes in the nature and location of disturbances can occur rapidly, and the potential for eruption could occur, but there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time,” the council added.

The volcano monitoring agency said scientists will continue to monitor the volcano and will provide a notification of volcanic activity if the situation changes.
