Magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Snyder, felt in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – People in Lubbock and parts of the Southern Plains and Permian Basin reported feeling an earthquake Monday evening.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the 4.9 magnitude quake about 90 miles southeast of Lubbock. Its epicenter was about 10 miles northeast of Hermley, east of Snyder and east of the Scurry-Fisher county line, north of Highway 180. Its depth was about 4.8 miles. A few minutes later, at 10:46 p.m., a 4.4 magnitude quake was recorded northwest of the initial epicenter, in Scurry County.

This wasn't the first earthquake to hit the area tonight. About an hour earlier, a 4.2 magnitude quake was recorded west of Pecos.
