A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Hermleigh, Texas, shortly before 11 p.m. local time on Monday, and was felt in Snyder, Abilene and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The quake struck 17 kilometers (10 miles) northeast of Hermleigh at a depth of 7 kilometers (4 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Many residents took to social media to report the tremors and shaking.

“I think it’s windy outside. Why did there ever be an earthquake in Dallas? I thought earthquakes like this didn’t happen in Texas,” one person wrote on X.

Another wrote: “Texas just had an earthquake. We don't usually get earthquakes like this, so it was a little scary.”

A third person wrote, “How did an earthquake just happen in West Texas. I was washing my face and singing along to Skz and felt the ground shake.”

One resident wrote: “A 4.9 magnitude earthquake just hit near my town. It sounded like thunder outside and the building shook for about 5 seconds. Fun times!”

Volcano Discovery, which tracks earthquakes, also received several reports of shaking.

“The shaking was enough to shake my bed enough to wake me up,” one Abilene resident reported. “Similar to what you would feel if someone pushed a bed, shook it a little, trying to wake someone up. It took me a moment to process what was happening because I was asleep when the shaking started. About a second later I felt it again, continuously, so I lifted my feet off the floor and felt the floor shaking as well. I got up and walked about 20 feet when the shaking stopped.”

“I sit on the couch and read to my family. My husband, daughter and I all felt uncomfortable sitting on different chairs in the same room,” added a resident of Lubac.

No damage has been reported so far.
