5.1-magnitude earthquake hits North Carolina

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Sunday’s earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 2.3 miles, according to the US Geological Survey (which has been reviewing this number), amplifying the effects it could have felt on the ground. Earthquake surface waves – of the type that produce the vibration we feel on the ground – travel more on the east coast than to the west. This is because the crust east of the Rocky Mountains is less fragmented and more cohesive.

A 2.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 1:57 am near the epicenter of the largest earthquake on Sunday.

The many aftershocks, many of which will be felt in the immediate vicinity of the 5.1-magnitude earthquake, will likely continue for more than a week as the ground continues to stabilize, shift and release pressure.

It is highly unlikely, but not impossible, that the 5.1 earthquake itself is a harbinger of an upcoming larger earthquake. This was the case in Ridgecrest, California, when a 6.4-magnitude earthquake on July 4, 2019 was followed by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake the following day.

At first glance, Sunday’s earthquake appears to have originated near the East Tennessee seismic zone, a strip of seismic activity stretching from the elevated terrain of eastern Tennessee toward the northeast all the way to the Appalachian Mountains into the Carolina. At least five earthquakes of magnitude 5 or more have occurred in that enclave since the late 17th century, including near Sparta.

While rumors circulated for a while on social media, it did not appear that Sunday’s earthquake was related to hydraulic fracturing or “fracturing”.

Preliminary data indicates that the earthquake was from a tilted reversal event.

Reverse faults are fractures in the Earth’s crust that occur at an angle. Usually, one block of the shell is shifted vertically on top of the other. The upper fault, known as the “hanging wall”, is pushed up to the top of the lower “foot wall”. Inverse errors are characterized by the accumulation of pressure stress. The Rocky Mountains and the Himalayas were formed by reverse fault processes.

Thrust faults are a type of inverse error wherein the interface between two blocks of the shell is closer to horizontal than vertical. This, in essence, causes one panel to slip under the other.

Sometimes the blocks slide sideways to side to side as one moves under the other. This appears to be the case with Sunday morning’s event, making it a “tilt reversal” slippage.
