USGS Raises Alert Level at Kilauea as Seismic Activity Increases

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says Kilauea Volcano has not erupted, but has raised alert levels at Kilauea Volcano after increased earthquake activity over the weekend.

The Air Defense Authority has raised the volcano alert level for ground hazards from “warning” to “caution”. The aviation color code has also been raised from “yellow” to “orange”.

The U.S. Geological Survey said earthquakes and ground deformations in Kilauea's East Upper Fault Zone began around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, a sign that magma was moving beneath the surface, scientists said.

Earthquake rates and ground deformation began to spike suddenly after 11 a.m. Monday, prompting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to close several areas in case of an eruption.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake activity was concentrated near the crater of the Pauahi volcano. About 350 earthquakes were reported in the past 24 hours.

According to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, it is not known whether current conditions will lead to a volcanic eruption in the near future or whether magma will remain trapped underground. However, an eruption in the upper East Kiauya Rift Zone is one possible outcome.

“It is not possible to determine where such an outbreak might occur, but the area between Hiiaka and Maunaolo craters in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is at risk for a new eruption based on past patterns of eruptive activity in this area,” the U.S. Geological Survey said in its latest update on Kilauea Tuesday morning.

Previous eruptions in Kilauea's upper rift zone have occurred over a period of hours to about a month, and the location of any future eruption will determine which areas could be in the path of new lava flows, scientists said.

Kilauea last erupted on June 3, four kilometers southwest of the Kilauea caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The eruption lasted only a few hours.
