Update on the ongoing series of earthquakes at Kilauea Volcano

(BIVN) – Kilauea Volcano has not erupted, but increasing earthquake rates and ground deformation continue as of Monday evening.

The earthquakes began picking up around 11 a.m. Monday, prompting the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to issue a status report on Kilauea at 12:36 p.m. Hawaii time. Since then, activity has decreased but remains high.

“At present, there are no signs of an imminent eruption, however, conditions may change rapidly,” USGS HVO scientists wrote.

The increased volcanic unrest has also led to the closure of several areas within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. As of Monday evening, the following closures remain in place:

The following temporary closures have been implemented:

Chain of Craters Road from the junction at Devastation parking lot to the coast. Kulanaokuaiki Campground is closed. Crater Rim Trail south of Nāhuku lava tube is closed. Coastal backcountry and Nāpau sites are closed. All new backcountry permits for those areas are cancelled. Escape Road from Nāhuku to Maunaulu is closed.

Over the past eight hours, there have been approximately 150 earthquakes under Kilauea’s upper East Fault Zone, which extends from Kinakakoi Crater southeast to Maunaolo. Activity peaked between noon and 2 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time, and earthquakes have been occurring at decreasing rates since then. Most of the earthquakes were below magnitude 2, although there were six events greater than magnitude 3. The largest was a magnitude 3.5 earthquake at 12:08 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time. Events occurred at depths between 1 and 3 km (0.6 and 1.8 miles) below the surface. Most of the earthquakes were too small to be felt, but several were reported in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and surrounding communities.

Seismic activity has been accompanied by high rates and variable patterns of ground deformation in the upper East Kīlauea Fault Zone. However, tiltmeters at the Kīlauea summit area (SDH, southwest of the summit, and UWE, northwest of the summit) do not show significant changes associated with this activity.

The Volcanic Alert Level/Aviation Color Code for Kilauea Volcano remains at Warning/Yellow. The Marine Volcano Watch continues to closely monitor Kilauea for signs of increased volcanic activity. Should volcanic activity change significantly, a new Volcanic Activity Notice will be issued.

Earthquake and ground deformation rates under the Middle and Lower East Fault Zone and the Southwest Fault Zone remain low. Current activity is limited to the summit zone and the Upper East Fault Zone.
