4.9 magnitude earthquake hits West Texas.. Residents and experts react

SNYDER, Texas — A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Big Country Monday evening.

One Snyder resident said there was only one way to describe how he felt.

“I felt like the earthquake had destroyed me,” Irving Wells said. “I mean, it was a 4.9 on the Richter scale, you know, it was bigger than anything Snyder had ever seen or felt.”

Wells said he is always very cautious when it comes to earthquakes.

“I’m not going to lie to you, I was a little scared,” Wells said. “I’m not going to lie to you all. I’m not going to sit here and act tough and stuff like that. Anything that has to do with an earthquake you have to be careful because you don’t know what’s going to happen to the ground underneath you.”

There are a few possible reasons for the increased earthquake activity, says Moira Plantier, a professor of geology at Hardin-Simmons University.

“There are some weaknesses in the bedrock there,” Plantier said. “And we're starting to attribute most of them to a lot of human activity, wastewater injection, different things like that, and that's where we're starting to see a lot of these weaknesses forming.”

Plantier said a new statistic from the US Geological Survey shows a significant increase in earthquake activity.

“They have seen an 81% increase in earthquakes of magnitude greater than 2.5 since the beginning of 2020,” Plantier said.

Snyder Emergency Management Coordinator Jay Calloway said the city is taking steps to ensure all infrastructure in Snyder and surrounding areas is safe.

“Snyder City utility crews are out inspecting sewer lines, water lines, water towers, water storage, the wastewater facility and the water treatment plant,” Callaway said. “They are checking for any damage or broken lines.”

Callaway said the quake only caused panic among residents within a radius.

“At this point, all we hear is the house shaking, the chairs shaking, the bed shaking,” Callaway said. “All the way from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, down to San Angelo, then to Midland-Odessa, then back to Lubbock.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, no damage had been reported in Scurry County.
