Turkey earthquake map updated by TÜBİTAK with active fault data

The head of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), Hasan Mandal, recently reported that the council is working to update Turkey’s seismic hazard map, with the aim of sharing a comprehensive list of active and live fault lines with the public by the end of 2025.

Under the leadership of TÜBİTAK, in cooperation with the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA), the Union of Municipalities of Turkey (TBB), 100 researchers and 22 universities, the “Turkey Earthquake Hazard Map” update project has established a research platform to determine the ancient seismic features of active faults in Turkey.

For nearly 10 months, the platform has been conducting studies at 19 different points on 128 active faults as part of the Paleoseismology Research Project in Turkey (P/SISMOTÜRK). The work is being carried out by a team of 100 scientists and researchers and 90 scholarship students from relevant departments of participating universities.

Mandal and Hasan Sozbilir, a lecturer at the Department of General Geology at Dokuz Eylul University (DEÜ) and a member of the Scientific Support Board of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Turkey, examined studies conducted in Pazarcık, the epicenter of the first 7.7 magnitude earthquake on February 6, 2023, as part of the project.

In an interview with Anadolu Agency, Mandal recalled the old seismic research conducted in Pazarcık, where the first 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred on February 6, 2023. He pointed out that they have not yet forgotten the pain of the disaster and are working day and night to find scientific solutions for the future.

Mandal explained that the “Earthquake Hazard Map of Turkey” will be updated through studies based on paleoseismology on active faults or fault segments.

“By the end of 2025, we will have mapped all active fault lines in Turkey and shared them with the public. In a meeting chaired by Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır, with the participation of our Disaster and Emergency Management Authority President, our Mass Transportation Authority President and our General Manager, public decision-makers came together for the first time.”

“This is happening for the first time. At least scientifically, we have learned a lesson. This is a reality for the whole world and our country, and with climate change events, this situation will get worse. We know how strong the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority worked after the earthquake, but we need to take the necessary precautions on scientific grounds so that there is no need for such strong responses,” he added.

Dr. Hasan Sozbilir, Professor of General Geology at Dokuz Eylul University (DEÜ) and member of the Scientific Support Board of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Turkey, stated that they have opened two trenches so far in their work on the Narli Fault as part of the project.

In examining the trenches, Sözbilir reported that the Narlı Fault did not rupture during the earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, and a new fault line was discovered. He explained: “We can see how the fault moved with the earthquake. When we look at this movement, we have determined that it does not match well with the movement of the Narlı Fault. So, a different type of fault movement occurred here. So, this is a fault independent of the Narlı Fault, and we believe that it is related to the East Anatolian Fault.”

Erkan Aksoy, a faculty member at the Department of Geological Engineering at Fırat University, said that it is a pleasure to see scientists from different universities in Turkey coming together for this project.

PhD student and geological engineer Bushra Yerli, who participated in the studies, expressed her happiness to be part of such a team in the early years of her career, noting that there is important work being done in this field.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
