Kilauea Volcano Hits Nearly 1,000 Earthquakes in Three Days: Big Island Now

Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island has been hit by nearly a thousand earthquakes in the past three days.

According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, 250 of these earthquakes were greater than 2 on the Richter scale. The largest event was a magnitude 3.6. All of the earthquakes were between 0.6 and 1.8 miles below the surface.

As of 4:30 p.m. on July 24, magma continues to move into a vertical sheet-like body, or dike, below the upper East Rift Zone near Kilauea's Pauahi crater.

“There is no imminent eruption at this time, but conditions could change quickly,” the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said Wednesday evening.

Unrest beneath Kilauea has been confined to the upper East Rift Zone; no unusual activity has been observed along the volcano's central and lower East Rift Zones or the Southwest Rift Zone.

The rapid onset and concentrated intensity of the July 22-24 earthquake, coupled with sudden changes in ground deformation patterns in the upper East Rift Zone, indicate that magma intrusion is occurring in the Pauahi crater area, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

“It is not possible to predict the exact outcome of this activity. Future eruptions are possible with little warning along the upper portions of the East Kilauea Rift Zone,” the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said. “Recent Kilauea eruptions occurred with less than an hour of advance warning in the form of accelerated rates of ground deformation and earthquakes.”

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has released the following possible scenarios that could occur in the coming days or weeks:

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory briefly raised the aviation alert/color code level for Kilauea Volcano from Advisory/Yellow to Watch/Orange during the latest bout of unrest on the upper East Rift Zone on July 23.
