According to the USGS, the epicenter was near Sparta, NC after 8 a.m.
The USGS database indicates that Sunday morning’s earthquake was the strongest earthquake to directly hit North Carolina in more than 100 years! This goes back to 1916 when a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Skyland, North Carolina near Asheville.
With the last earthquake struck North Carolina long ago. We figured you might have some questions, and here are some simple explanations from the USGS to help you understand earthquakes better!
So what is an earthquake?
An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of Earth suddenly slide over one another. The surface you slide from is called the fault or fault level. The location below the Earth’s surface where an earthquake begins is called the inferior epicenter, and the location directly above the Earth’s surface is called the epicenter.
Sometimes an earthquake has earthquakes. These are small earthquakes occurring in the same location as the next largest earthquake. Scientists cannot tell that an earthquake is a bad omen until the largest earthquake occurs. The largest major earthquake is called the main shock. Major shocks always follow aftershocks. These are small earthquakes that then occur in the same location as the main shock. Depending on the size of the main shock, aftershocks can last for weeks, months, and even years after the main shock!
What causes earthquakes and where do they occur?
Earth has four main layers: the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust. The crust and the upper part of the mantle form a thin crust on the surface of our planet.
But this skin is not a single piece – it is made of many pieces like a puzzle covering the surface of the Earth. Not only that, but these puzzle pieces keep moving slowly, sliding over each other and bumping into each other. We call these puzzle pieces tectonic plates, and the edges of the plates are called the boundaries of the plates. Plate boundaries are made up of many faults, and most earthquakes around the world are caused by these faults. Since the edges of the panels are rough, they snag while the rest of the board continues to move. Finally, when the plate moves far enough, the edges separate from a defect and an earthquake occurs.
Why does the earth shake when an earthquake occurs?
While the edges of the defects are stuck together, and the rest of the block is moving, the energy that would normally cause the blocks to slide apart is stored. When the force of the moving blocks finally overcomes the friction of the jagged edges of the fault and loosens up, all the stored energy is released. Energy radiates outward from the fault in all directions in seismic waves like ripples on a pond. Seismic waves shake the earth as they move through it, and when the waves reach the surface of the earth, they shake the earth and anything on it like our homes and us!
