Cianjur – Earthquake is one of the disasters that can occur in the Cianjur district of West Java. This is because Cianjur is located on the Kugenang Fault, which is currently active and prone to shifting. In an effort to increase preparedness capacity to reduce disaster risks, especially earthquake risks, the YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU) in collaboration with the Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in the Cianjur district conducted an earthquake emergency response simulation in Nyalandung Village in the Kugenang district on Saturday (11/5).

The simulation was conducted based on the disaster management plan and contingency plan documents formulated by the Nyalindong Village Disaster Task Force and YEU. In addition, it was also a follow-up to the disaster risk reduction training series that had been conducted previously.

The simulation started on 11 May 2024 at 10.15 am local time and was attended by representatives from BPBD Cianjur, Mr. Wawan Setiawan and Mr. Herman Suherman, and the disaster task force of Nyalindung and YEU villages. The simulation started with an alarm sounding as an earthquake signal, followed by communication and coordination between the disaster task force of Nyalindung and BPBD. After that, the disaster task force evacuated and dealt with the injured as well as operated a public kitchen for the earthquake-affected communities.

According to Mr. Wawan Setiawan from BPBD Cianjur, this simulation was very useful and beneficial for the Nyalindung community, especially for those affected by the earthquake. The community became more aware of the impact of earthquakes and can reduce the risk of disasters. “We really appreciate the YEU team who accompanied and assisted Nyalindung village in preparing disaster risk reduction documents, contingency plans and organizing the emergency response simulation,” said Wawan.

The earthquake simulation was chosen because Cianjur District, including Nyalindong Village, is an earthquake-prone area. Based on the disaster risk assessment of BPBD Cianjur, there are 10 disasters that are likely to occur in the area, but only the earthquake is the focus of the simulation. Considering the previous earthquake on November 21, 2022, which resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of damaged homes, the earthquake emergency response simulation was conducted with the aim of providing the village disaster task force, local government, and communities with an understanding of the importance of disaster preparedness and risk reduction. In addition, it is expected that this simulation will be a regular effort in Nyalindong Village in the future.
