Scurry County officials talk about recent earthquakes and reported damage.
LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Scurry County Judge Dan Hicks has declared a state of disaster and requested assistance from the state after one of the most powerful earthquakes in Texas history caused damage across the region Friday morning.
According to the USGS, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck east of Snyder, northeast of Hermleigh. It was felt about 80 miles northwest in Lubbock, and across parts of the South Plains and West Texas. On the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI), the USGS gives it a rating of VI-Strong. The USGS updated the magnitude again, now at 5.1 as of 11 a.m. There were also aftershocks of magnitude 3.2 at 9:40 and magnitude 2.7 at 10:44.
The USGS has updated the earthquake's magnitude to 5.1.
Judge Hicks said Scurry County has had 61 earthquakes in the past seven days.
“Since the first earthquake felt on July 22, 2024 at approximately 9:38 p.m., a 4.9, a 4.4 at approximately 9:46 p.m. to a 5.0 today at approximately 9:28 a.m. July 26, 2024, damage has been found throughout Scurry County to businesses and homes,” Hicks wrote on Facebook. He said Emergency Management Coordinator Jay Calloway is working closely with the Texas Department of Emergency Management to monitor damage throughout Scurry County and the surrounding area.

What is the difference between magnitude and intensity? The USGS answers this question.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck at 9:28 a.m. Friday at a depth of about two miles, about eight miles northeast of Hermleigh. It's near Highway 180 on the Scurry-Fisher county line. It was followed by a 3.2-magnitude quake at 9:40 a.m. in roughly the same location. There was also a 2.6-magnitude quake in the area Thursday morning.
The map below shows roughly where residents in the area where the 5.1-magnitude quake struck would have felt it, with minor shaking noted in Lubbock, Odessa, Midland, Abilene and San Angelo. You can report the shaking to the USGS Friday morning.

This comes just days after a 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck near the same area Monday night, on the east side of the county line, followed by aftershocks that night including a 4.4 magnitude quake. The strongest quake Monday night was at a depth of 4.8 miles. The image below shows Monday night's strongest quake, along with another one that struck an hour earlier west of Pecos.
This map shows two earthquakes that were recorded Monday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. After the first, a magnitude 4.9 quake east of Snyder, another magnitude 4.4 quake followed not far away. (KCBD)
Increased earthquake activity
According to the USGS, hydraulic fracturing does not directly cause most induced earthquakes. “The disposal of wastewater, a byproduct of oil production, is the primary cause of the recent increase in earthquakes in the central United States,” the USGS states on this page: Myths and Misconceptions About Induced Earthquakes. Additionally, it states that not all wastewater injection wells cause earthquakes.
