Did you feel the shaking in North Texas? 5.1 magnitude earthquake, more tremors recorded west of the area

North Texas residents felt some shaking Friday morning after two earthquakes were detected in West Texas.

The U.S. Geological Survey said reports of tremors extended to Dallas-Fort Worth from earthquakes recorded about 250 miles from Dallas, near Hermley in Scurry County.

The first quake, which struck just before 9:30 a.m., registered at magnitude 5.1. Another nearby quake registered at magnitude 3.2 about 10 minutes later. At about 10:45 a.m., a third quake was measured at magnitude 2.7.

The quakes were the latest to rattle Texas, with four recorded near Hermleigh Monday night. The first, which struck at about 10:38 p.m., was the strongest at 4.9 magnitude, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The weakest of the four was 2.8 magnitude. The latest quake struck just before midnight.

A 3.0-magnitude earthquake was also recorded Tuesday. These quakes are likely caused by human activity and are known to be “induced,” said Justin Rubenstein, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

The majority of induced earthquakes in Texas are caused by the disposal of wastewater from oil and gas drilling, while others are caused by hydraulic fracturing and a process called secondary recovery, Rubenstein told the Dallas Morning News.

During secondary extraction, also known as enhanced oil recovery, operators inject water or carbon dioxide into an old oil and gas field to extract more resources, he said. Earthquakes like those on Monday and Tuesday were likely caused by this process.
