AC geologist explains tremors in Amarillo after Scurry County earthquakes

AMARILLO, Texas (Korea Food and Drug Administration) – While 61 earthquakes have been reported in Scurry County recently, tremors could be felt 200 miles away in the Amarillo area.

Dr. Richard Hobbs, chair of the Department of Physical and Biological Sciences at Amarillo College, says the tremors in the area are due to the type and texture of the ground in the area.

“The rocks here are very old and very cold, so my analogy is like a steel rod,” said Dr. Hobbs. “When you hit one end of it, the seismic waves or waves travel down the rod very easily.”

The tremors felt are considered aftershocks of larger earthquakes.

How you feel aftershocks also depends on the structure of the building you are in, and they usually need to be 2.5 magnitude or greater.

“It's like dominoes. As soon as you hit one, the other one starts moving. And what we're seeing here is that as soon as the first earthquake happens, the stress around that fault changes, so other areas start to follow it with aftershocks, and that's what we're feeling,” Dr. Hobbs said.

According to Dr. Hobbs, we will not know whether these earthquakes and aftershocks will continue until after they occur, due to the unpredictability of their occurrence.
