Community reaction to recent earthquakes in the region

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Residents of Texas felt another earthquake today, the second in less than a week.

It didn't take long for people all over our area to start sharing their experiences.

Although the earthquakes occurred 185 miles away from Texoma, residents throughout Texoma felt their effects.

We heard from a Wichita Falls woman who said she was on the third floor of her apartment building when the fifth-strongest earthquake in Texas history struck.

“I've never experienced an earthquake before so it was really strange, and the vibrations I felt were vibrations,” the resident said.

She said she was shocked to encounter such situations, especially here in Wichita Falls. She had traveled back and forth to California over the past few years and had never encountered such situations.

It all stems from earthquakes that occur east of Snyder, Texas, located in Scurry County.

While the aftermath of recent earthquakes has affected Texoma twice, Scurry County leaders say they have experienced 61 earthquakes in the past seven days.

“When a disturbance happens, you can feel it in other places, especially when it's a magnitude 5.0 and above,” said Jaden Knowles, a meteorologist at First Alert.

The USGS has updated the magnitude of the earthquake that struck at 9:28 a.m. today to 5.1, followed by aftershocks of magnitude 3.2 and 2.7.

This extremely rare event comes on the heels of a major earthquake that was also felt on Monday of this week, measuring 4.9 magnitude.

“This is not something we typically see across the state of Texas. We felt it in the DFW metropolitan area and across Texoma. And up north, in Lawton, Oklahoma, in Snyder and south of Bowie, and even here in Wichita Falls, I felt it this morning while I was resting, and that's exactly what's happening. And the aftershocks are still happening.”

Earthquakes can cause damage to buildings, businesses, and landscapes, and fortunately, residents in Texoma have not reported any damage, but it has raised some questions and concerns. It has left many people wondering what is going on.

“Maybe one of the shelves fell down, and that's what caused the shaking because I have a lot of stuff, and everything was fine inside. This whole porch started shaking. And my cats were looking at me like, 'What's happening, Mom?'” the resident said.

“It would be great if we could go ahead and take safety precautions. It’s kind of hard to defend against earthquakes because you never know when they’re going to happen. But I know some early signs, if you have animals, animals are your best meteorologists. If you see your pet acting different or acting strange, I know that sometimes they can sense an earthquake is coming,” Knowles explained.

The Scurry County judge declared a state of disaster following today's earthquake and asked for assistance from the state.

He said damage was found throughout the area, both in businesses and homes.
