Earthquakes in the Red Sea between Sudan and Saudi Arabia

The US Geological Survey announced today that two strong earthquakes were recorded in the Red Sea near the coasts of Sudan and Saudi Arabia today.

The US Geological Survey said on its website that the first earthquake occurred about 197 kilometers northeast of the city of Tokar in Sudan's Red Sea State, and measured 4.7 on the Richter scale.

The second earthquake struck about 174 kilometers northeast of Tokar, and measured 4.2 on the Richter scale.

The official spokesman for the Sudanese government quoted the Saudi Geological Survey as saying that seismic monitoring stations recorded an earthquake in the middle of the Red Sea, 161 kilometers west of Al-Laith Governorate, at a depth of 10.4 kilometers, at exactly 12:09 this morning.

There have been no reports yet from Saudi Arabia and Sudan about the losses caused by the earthquakes.

The Red Sea Rift is a chain of ridges between two tectonic plates, the African Plate and the Arabian Plate. The divergence between these two plates has led to the formation of the Red Sea Rift. Magnetic anomalies indicate that the spreading rate on both sides of the Red Sea is about one centimeter per year.

Dr. Zuhair Hassan Al-Issa of the University of Jordan believes that more than 90% of earthquakes in the Red Sea are linked to volcanoes.

“However, the largest earthquakes in the region over the past few decades show the presence of two active faults supporting a divergent environment between the Arabian and African plates,” Al-Essa wrote in his 2015 study.
