Two more earthquakes were reported Saturday in West Texas after tremors were felt in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Two more earthquakes were reported Saturday afternoon in West Texas, a day after the Scurry County judge issued a disaster declaration after saying more than 60 quakes had struck the area in the past week, causing property damage.

Several Dallas-Fort Worth area residents reported feeling aftershocks from a series of earthquakes this week in Scurry County, a community of about 16,000 people about 250 miles from Dallas. According to a Facebook post from the county, 61 earthquakes had been reported by 10:20 a.m. Friday. The U.S. Geological Survey reported several more quakes Friday afternoon, and on Saturday it recorded a 4.5 magnitude quake around 4:08 p.m. and a 2.7 magnitude quake around 6:08 p.m.

A cluster of earthquakes was reported in roughly the same area, about 18 kilometers northeast of Hermley, along the Scurry County and Fisher County line.

Scurry County Judge Dan Hicks issued a disaster declaration Friday morning and said he was asking for any assistance possible from the state of Texas. He said the emergency management coordinator is working with the Texas Division of Emergency Management to monitor damage in the county and surrounding areas.

The Snyder City Emergency Management Office said in a Facebook post that increased seismic activity has caused damage to buildings, homes and infrastructure.

“This includes potential hazards such as weak foundations, cracked walls, and damaged utility lines. Damage has been reported in multiple areas and varies in severity,” the post said.

Officials asked residents to report any damage. The Scurry County Sheriff's Office said Saturday evening that no injuries had been reported.

The quakes may have been caused by human activity, Justin Rubenstein, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said Friday. The Hermle area has had a history of earthquakes dating back to the 1970s, Rubenstein said, and all are believed to be caused by human activity.

Induced earthquakes in Texas are becoming more likely because of the disposal of wastewater from oil and gas drilling, a process called secondary recovery, Rubenstein said.

During secondary recovery, also known as enhanced oil recovery, water or carbon dioxide is injected into old oil and gas fields to extract more resources, he said.
