Amazing! Earthquakes topple the historic Mexican club Chivas

SANTA CLARA – San Jose needed to hold on for another minute.

But Chivas, favourites to beat the Earthquakes on Saturday night, showed why they are one of Mexico's greatest teams when Roberto Alvarado raced into space and slotted the ball into the top corner to level in the 98th minute, seven minutes into stoppage time at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

After more than an hour and a half, the team, wearing red and white striped kit, was finally able to give their fans something to cheer about.

But instead of collapsing at 1-1, the Earthquakes held on to win 4-3 on penalties to claim three points in Saturday's League Cup opener.

“That night, it was different, like the guys were fully prepared,” San Jose coach Ian Russell said.

The powerful Mexican team brought a rich history and a box full of trophies to the South Bay.

Guadalajara also brought in former Quakes star Kid Coyle, who had the support of 99 percent of the 50,675 fans in attendance, who made Levi's Stadium look like Akron with loud “CHI-VAS” chants all night long.

The Earthquakes spent most of the game back in a five-man defensive line, with Rodriguez and Tanner Beason holding the defense together and preventing Chivas from recovering in a tense match that saw five yellow cards between the two teams.

Chivas, who went 2-1-1 in the Apertura stage of the Liga MX season, were San Jose's first opponent in the Leagues Cup, which pits MLS teams against Mexican teams.

The matchup was a chance to take a breather for the struggling Earthquakes, who entered the competition at the bottom of the league standings with a 4-19-2 record.

Once the match kicked off in front of a huge crowd of Chivas supporters, the Quix looked like they had truly rejuvenated themselves.

“They're a historic team, like Chivas, but I knew we could hurt them on the counter because we have so much speed up front,” San Jose coach Ian Russell said.

Right winger Christian Espinosa sent a perfect cross to Ebobisse, who cut inside the middle of the penalty area and headed the ball into the net in the sixth minute.

“There were chances that I was frustrated because I didn't score,” Ebobisse said. “You can start doubting yourself, but my team-mates don't doubt that, and that's all you can ask for.”

In the 26th minute, San Jose almost doubled their lead when striker Amahle Pellegrino sent a cross to Ebobisse, who fired a powerful header that Chivas goalkeeper Jose Rangel had difficulty saving.

Despite having nearly 60 percent of the possession in the first half, Chivas' attack was lacklustre, with the exception of some audacious attempts by Coyle and midfielder Erick Gutierrez, and the visitors had just six shots, two of which were on target.

It's been more than two decades since the legendary Mexican club played San Jose. Guadalajara traveled to the South Bay in 2003 and defeated the Earthquakes 2-0.

On the same day that future manager Ian Russell started working in midfield, Coyle was born in Ceres, 100 miles away.

Coyle began the second half with a dogged determination to push forward, this time moving from the right wing to the left wing. But San Jose’s back line, led by Benjy Kikanovic, held firm under pressure, even if Coyle used a variety of feints and dribbles to rush into space on a few occasions.

Even strong second-half substitutes Armando Gonzalez and Fernando Beltrán couldn't help San Jose find a goal, with Daniel taking several shots to the body during aerial duels. It was on that note that Alvarado broke San Jose's heart and forced them to go to penalties with less than a minute left in stoppage time.

San Jose won't have much time to prepare for its next group stage match. San Jose hosts the Los Angeles Galaxy at Paypal Park on Wednesday.
