5.0-magnitude earthquake hits Central Highlands Province

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Kon Plong district of Kon Tum province in the Central Highlands on Sunday, the strongest quake ever recorded in the area, according to the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Information Center of the Institute of Geophysics.

The earthquake struck at 11:35:10 a.m. and had a focal depth of about 8.1 kilometers, with a disaster risk level of 2 in and around the epicenter area.

Earlier in the day, the region also recorded three consecutive earthquakes of magnitude 4.1, 3.6 and 3.3, causing tremors. None of the quakes posed any catastrophic risks.

Nguyen Xuan Anh, director of the Institute of Geophysics, said that according to observations, the cause of the phenomenon is related to earthquakes caused by the reservoir.

Immediately after the four consecutive earthquakes, the People's Committee of Kon Plong District issued a document requesting members of the steering committee for disaster prevention, search and rescue and civil defense in the district, agencies and units of the People's Committee of the district; and the People's Committees of the municipalities and Mang Din Township to take urgent measures in response to the earthquakes.
