4.9 magnitude earthquake hits Southern California

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Monday, July 29.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck 22 kilometers (13.6 miles) east-northeast of Barstow, California, at about 1 p.m. local time. Barstow is located in the Mojave Desert in Southern California's Inland Empire region — roughly halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Minutes later, two more earthquakes struck nearby. At 1:03 p.m., a magnitude 3.5 quake struck 21 kilometers (about 13 miles) east-northeast of the city. At about 1:05 p.m., another magnitude 2.7 quake struck. The third quake was much closer to a magnitude 4.9 quake than a magnitude 3.5 quake. It was also about 22 kilometers east-northeast of the city.

Barstow Fire Protection Battalion Chief Travis Espinoza said there have been no reports of damage or calls for service since the earthquakes, according to the Los Angeles Times.

California seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones said several earthquakes of this magnitude have occurred in the Mojave Desert in the past.
