An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck California on Monday, and residents of Los Angeles felt the tremors.

Earthquake hits California

The quake was felt strongly in California and Southern California, and was felt in the Los Angeles area. The 4.9-magnitude quake was recorded 15 miles from the city of Barstow in San Bernardino County. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the ground began shaking at about 1:00 p.m. local time, and the quake occurred at a depth of 5 miles. Aftershocks measured 3.5 and 2.7, respectively, rattling Californians. Except for San Bernardino County, the quake was felt in Los Angeles, Kern, Riverside and Orange County, USA Today reported.

Californians were quick to reassure themselves that they had felt an earthquake, taking to microblogging platform X to confirm that the state's ground was shaking.

Barstow Fire Battalion Chief Travis Espinoza said there were no immediate reports of injuries or major property damage in the aftermath of the quake. Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson tweeted that state officials were aware of the magnitude of the quake, which occurred 120 miles away. “So far, there have been no reports of damage or impact to our city,” he wrote.
