90 earthquakes hit West Texas in a week, Scurry County declares disaster

SCORRY COUNTY, Texas – West Texas has experienced 90 earthquakes in the past seven days alone.

It's been a week since the first 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck, setting off a series of quakes.

The Scurry County judge declared a state of disaster due to increased seismic activity, structural damage, safety concerns and resource mobilization.

The country has experienced four earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater, with the highest measuring 5.1 on Friday morning.

The suspected cause of these earthquakes is attributed to both natural and human activities. There are faults in the area that are likely to be active. Human activity can be linked to “water flooding,” in which water is injected into the ground to help extract oil and gas. This process causes the fault to lose friction, causing the fault to move. It is not hydraulic fracturing.

Experts from the USGS say the depth of the earthquakes is more likely to be related to natural causes than injection because of the depth of the earthquakes. The floodwaters do not reach the same depth. More research is needed to determine the cause.

The intensity of earthquakes is high in our area. It is unlikely that a very strong earthquake will affect our area, but it is not impossible.

The Natural Resources Research Service (NRRS) has been investigating last week’s earthquakes in the Camp Springs area along the Fisher/Scurry County line in West Texas. In an effort to reduce seismic activity that could be caused by underground produced water injection, several companies operating in the area have converted deep brine disposal wells to shallow brine disposal wells over the past year. (Disposal wells are used to dispose of produced water, which is water that comes out of wells during oil and gas production.) NRRS inspectors have inspected brine disposal wells within two and a half miles of the earthquake cluster, and we will evaluate next steps to mitigate the earthquakes. We will continue to take appropriate measures to protect the environment and the people in the area.
