A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Barstow, California, Monday afternoon, and was felt in San Bernardino, Palm Springs, Fort Irwin and Los Angeles. The quake struck at 1 p.m. local time, 13 miles northeast of Barstow in San Bernardino County. The U.S. Geological Survey initially recorded the magnitude as 5.1, but later revised it to 4.9. It was followed by several strong aftershocks of magnitude 3.5 and 2.7. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Officers were assessing critical infrastructure such as bridges and overpasses, California Highway Patrol spokesman Shane Hernandez told KTLA 5 News.

“It felt like the earthquake was rolling a little bit,” Hernandez told the newspaper. “And then when the aftershocks came, it felt like they were pushing us up … It felt like it never stopped.”

Renowned seismologist Dr Lucy Jones said the epicenter of the earthquake was near the Calico Fault.

“Yes, it was an earthquake. It was a magnitude 4.9 (current estimates) east of Barstow. We've had earthquakes of this magnitude several times in the Mojave Desert,” she wrote on X.

“This site is near the Calico Fault – which crosses the Mojave River. It's more than 50 kilometers from the San Andreas Fault, so it wouldn't change the likelihood of a San Andreas earthquake,” she added.
