Taupo tsunami caused by 'special type of earthquake'

It is one of the furthest places from the ocean in New Zealand.

But in the middle of the night in 2022, a tsunami in Lake Taupo washed over the shore, damaging moored boats. It was caused by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake triggered by unrest in the volcano beneath the lake.

The tsunami was caused by a “quite unusual earthquake”, GNS Science volcano seismologist Dr Oliver Lamb told Afternoons.

“When people think about earthquakes, the classic model we see is … two big blocks of rock moving past each other,” he said.

“This is not what we think happened that night in November 2022. What we think actually happened is a special type of earthquake, very rare, and only seen at a few other volcanoes around the world, called a scuttling earthquake.

Lamb explained that the closed-door earthquakes were large sections of land moving upward behind the lake, like closed doors.

He and his team have about a dozen seismometers around the lake that provide them with data for the study.

Learning as much as possible about volcanic activity would help the region better prepare when the volcano erupts again, Lamb said.

The last major eruption of Lake Taupo was 1,800 years ago.
