Earthquake hits Quebec city, tremors felt in Montreal – Montreal

A small earthquake struck outside Montreal on Monday, Earthquakes Canada said.

The federal agency said on its website that a 3.2-magnitude earthquake struck at about 8:12 a.m. near Valleyfield, a city in southwestern Quebec about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Montreal.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 23 kilometers east-southeast of Valleyfield, and 41 kilometers southwest of Montreal.

The agency said that “the earthquake was felt by the residents of Montreal.”

She added, “There were no reports of damage, and no damage is expected.”

Canada averages 11 earthquakes per day.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the Geological Survey of Canada records and locates more than 4,000 earthquakes in Canada each year, or an average of 11 earthquakes per day. Of these, only about 50 are felt, or about one earthquake per week.

Most earthquakes occur along active plate boundaries off the coast of British Columbia, along the Northern Range (southwest corner of Yukon Territory and in the Richardson Mountains and Mackenzie Valley), and in the Arctic margins (including Nunavut and northern Quebec).

Earthquakes also occur frequently in the Ottawa Valley and St. Lawrence Valley, in New Brunswick, and in the maritime region south of Newfoundland.

The largest earthquake ever recorded in Canada was a magnitude 8.1 earthquake that struck off Haida Gwaii on Canada's west coast on August 22, 1949.

The 1949 earthquake ruptured a 500-kilometre section of the Queen Charlotte Fault and was felt across nearly all of British Columbia, as far north as the Yukon Territory and as far south as Oregon, Earthquakes Canada said.
