4.9 magnitude earthquake hits Southern California

Southern Californians returning from lunch on Monday were shaken by a 4.9-magnitude earthquake. The quake struck about 1 p.m. about 13.6 miles northeast of Barstow and was felt across the southern part of the state, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Two aftershocks — one of magnitude 3.5 and the other of magnitude 2.7 — occurred within five minutes of the initial quake, the USGS reported. “We’ve seen earthquakes of this magnitude in the Mojave Desert many times,” said seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones. “This site is near the Calico Fault, which crosses the Mojave. It’s more than 50 kilometers from the San Andreas Fault, so that wouldn’t change the likelihood of a San Andreas earthquake.”

As of 2:25 p.m. Monday, no injuries or major damage had been reported.

According to CBS News, Gabrielle Tabb, a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology, explained: “Because the Barstow earthquake was on the Calico Hidalgo Fault, its proximity to the San Andreas Fault raises the question of whether this earthquake is a harbinger of a larger earthquake to come. The likelihood of that is very low.”
