The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD has become the most famous volcanic eruption in history. But now archaeologists have discovered two Pompeii citizens who were spared the eruption. It seems that two natural disasters struck the city at the same time.

During the eruption of Vesuvius, earthquakes also struck the city. Italian archaeologists now believe that the eruption did not kill everyone. Some died because of the earthquakes.

The Roman historian Pliny the Younger witnessed the eruption from a distance. It is his only personal account of the event. In his letters, he spoke of earthquakes, but there was no evidence that they had killed anyone so far.

The Mystery of the Disaster

Experts agree that the catastrophic event at Pompeii had two main phases. First came clouds of ash and pumice, which collapsed roofs and suffocated the city’s inhabitants. Then came pyroclastic flows, a superheated cloud of gas and volcanic material. The mystery lies in the timing of the earthquakes.

“These complexities are like a jigsaw puzzle where all the pieces have to fit together to get the full picture,” said archaeologist Domenico Sparris.

The two men, both about 55 years old, took refuge in a large house in the city center. Neither showed signs of suffocation or death from the intense heat. Rather, they were killed by the brute force of the collapse of the building they were in. Their skeletons show numerous broken bones.

Researchers excavated the chamber where the skeletons were found, then carefully analyzed layers of ash and pumice to reveal what happened inside. It turned out that the men died before the lava flow that buried Pompeii.

“The collapse of structures linked to the accumulation of pumice or the impact of volcanic flows were not the only risks threatening the inhabitants of ancient Pompeii,” the archaeological team concluded in a statement.
