New Jersey records more than 200 earthquakes since powerful quake hit East Coast

The 2.2-magnitude earthquake that struck western New Jersey early Wednesday morning was the state's 201st since a powerful 4.8-magnitude quake struck the eastern United States in early April.

The latest quake was centered about three miles east of Califon, a small town in Hunterdon County that has seen dozens of tremors since a 4.8-magnitude quake centered in nearby Tuscanbury on April 5.

The quake struck at about 1:40 a.m. and was the first of at least magnitude 2.0 in New Jersey since May 24, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

There have been 17 earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or greater since the main 4.8 magnitude quake recorded on April 5.

While some people in California reported feeling mild tremors on the NextDoor app, California City Manager and Clerk Karen Mastro was not among them.

“Again, I slept through the earthquake,” Mastro said Wednesday morning. None of her colleagues at City Hall felt the quake.

Hunterton County Emergency Management officials reported no damage from the quake, and Mastro said mid-morning that no one had contacted the city council about it.

The USGS did not respond to a request for additional information Wednesday morning.

Aftershocks become less frequent over time, the USGS said, “although they can last for days, weeks, months or even years in the event of a very large mainshock.”

In July, six earthquakes occurred in New Jersey—five around Califon and one near New Egypt in Ocean County. Fifteen earthquakes were recorded in New Jersey during June.

More earthquake reading technology has been deployed in parts of New Jersey near the site of the April earthquake.

Using additional tools, researchers from the USGS and Rutgers University hope to pinpoint the source, strength and duration of the recent aftershocks and better pinpoint where the initial quake originated.
