The Snyder County area west of Fort Worth has experienced more than 90 earthquakes in the past week.

Over the past week, dozens of earthquakes have struck west of Fort Worth, Texas. The source of the quakes is near Snyder, the capital of Scurry County, which has a population of just over 11,000.

A seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey told the Dallas Morning News that the tremors were likely linked to human activity, as some oil and gas operations in the area have been linked to quakes in the past. The Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates the oil and gas industry, sent inspectors to the area on Monday.

Jay Calloway, emergency management coordinator for the city of Snyder and Scurry County, spoke to the Texas Standard about the series of earthquakes.

This version has been slightly edited for clarity:

Texas Standard: As of last Friday, Scurry County had experienced 61 earthquakes in one week. What's life like there now?

Jay Calloway: Things are going pretty much as normal for most people. People are a little bit worried about what's going to happen next. As of this morning, there have been 91 earthquakes in the past seven days, the largest of which was a 5.1 magnitude quake on Friday, I was told. That's the fifth-strongest earthquake to hit Texas so far.

Well, can you give us some examples of property damage as a result of these earthquakes?

This phenomenon varies from place to place. The most common thing we see is cracks in walls and ceilings. We had a water line break in Snyder as a result, it happened on Monday night the 22nd, as a result of the first earthquake. Fortunately, our city utility crews were able to fix that water and get people back on water.

Brick separation around windows and door frames. There are a few cracks in the foundation, and multiple areas. Their significance varies.

You mentioned that the county has issued a disaster declaration due to these earthquakes. What does that mean for any potential future repairs?

We have issued a disaster declaration to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of all members of our community, and to be able to mobilize resources, if necessary, from the state to assist in the event that events continue to escalate.

As with any natural disaster, you can’t predict the future. But issuing this declaration doesn’t mean we’re on the cusp of another major disaster. We’ve made the declaration to be more proactive. It opens up resources.

I think people might be making lifestyle changes – you know, those beautiful antiques on the shelves or something like that. I mean, do people make changes like that? Have you done it?

I personally haven't made any changes, and I haven't heard of anyone else making changes. I'm sure there are people who make sure no plates or valuables are left on the counter.

Has the city or county started enforcing any kind of building standards when it comes to earthquake resistance, or has that not been introduced yet?

We still follow the standard building code issued by the city and county for buildings here.

You mentioned the Texas Railroad Commission, the state's oil and gas regulator. Their inspectors recently arrived in Scurry County to help determine what caused these tremors. Have you heard from them yet?

No ma'am, I didn't. All I know is that they're investigating it on their end.

Is there anything else you would like the rest of Texans to know about what you're going through, or maybe what you need?

If anyone in the Scurry County area has suffered any damage, please follow the Snyder City Emergency Management Office Facebook page and report that damage through the TDEM iSTAT posted there. We are beginning to document this for the state.

Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
