Foster + Partners has revealed its vision for rebuilding the city of Antakya in Turkey following the earthquake that devastated the country in February last year.

The firm is collaborating with Buro Happold, Turkish practice DB Architects and KEYM Urban Renewal Centre on the 30-square-kilometre project, which was led by the Turkish Design Council.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake destroyed about 80 percent of the 2,300-year-old city, and nearly half of the 55,000 people killed lived in the surrounding Hatay province.

Among the 10,000 buildings in Antakya, known in ancient times as Antioch, that collapsed or had to be demolished were several historical sites, including the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Paul and the Antioch Temple.

Turkey's Design Council said Foster + Partners' plans to rebuild the city were guided by a series of design principles that aimed to preserve “the city's cherished spirit and pre-earthquake characteristics.”

The new road networks will largely follow existing patterns, with additional links added to improve walkability and allow for more parks, playgrounds and squares.

The edges of rivers and streams will be reduced, with the edge of the Asi River becoming a new river park under the master plan with views of the old city and mountains.

A new bus system will also be created, including transfer centers located at major intersections around the city.

Antakya lies on a major fault line and has been devastated by earthquakes several times in its history. In 115 and 526 AD, the city was hit by one of the largest earthquakes in the Mediterranean world, killing an estimated 250,000 people.
