Magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits Italy, no immediate damage: officials

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Calabria region of southern Italy late Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the quake's epicentre was three kilometres (two miles) west of Pietrapaola in the Ionian province of Cosenza.

Fire officials wrote on the X website that there were no reports of damage or requests for assistance, but that checks were ongoing.

“The situation is calm,” Pietrapola Mayor Manuela Laponia told Rai News 24.

But she said residents felt “other, less powerful tremors” after the first quake, and “we are all in the street.”

The head of the Italian seismological institute, Carlo Doglioni, told Rai News 24 that the region had witnessed scattered earthquakes in recent days, and that the institute was monitoring the situation.

“We don't know if this is the maximum (tremor) in the series,” Doglioni said.

On social media, some people said they felt the quake as far away as Bari, the capital of Puglia, about 250 kilometres (150 miles) to the north.
