Earthquake hits southern Italy, no initial reports of damage

ROME – An earthquake measuring about 5.0 magnitude struck southern Italy on Thursday and was felt across a wide area, but there were no initial reports of major damage, monitoring agencies said.

In a post on the X website, the Italian fire department said it had not yet received any reports of damage or requests for assistance. The country's civil protection agency also offered the same reassuring message.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy said the quake's epicentre was near the city of Cosenza in the Calabria region and struck at 9:43 p.m. (1943 GMT) with a magnitude of 5.0.

The German Research Center for Geosciences initially estimated the earthquake's magnitude at 5.3, but later revised it to 4.6.

Large parts of central and southern Italy are prone to earthquakes.

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck central Italy in the middle of the night in August 2016, killing about 300 people and destroying much of the mountain town of Amatrice.
