An Okanagan Falls resident said he felt like a “pressure wave hit his chest” when a small earthquake struck the community on Friday.

Ryan Curtis was sitting outside when suddenly the windows and his entire house shook.

“It was really crazy. I thought, ‘A sonic boom?’ and I thought it was a meteor shower because it hit the Earth so fast. There was no meteor buildup,” he said.

“Usually, when an earthquake happens, you feel it getting bigger and bigger, and then suddenly it hits you.”

A sudden vibration can also be seen on Curtis' home security cameras during the event.

“When you came out, all the neighbors came out looking at you like, 'What the hell?'

The US Geological Survey website reported that a 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck three kilometers east-northeast of Okanagan Falls.

Residents of Penticton and surrounding areas heard, and in some cases felt, strong shaking this afternoon during an earthquake.

Just before 5 p.m. Friday, a short, loud bang could be heard from downtown Penticton and beyond in the South Okanagan.

Castanet readers say they felt the short earthquake and heard its sound.
