6.8 magnitude earthquake strikes off Mindanao island in Philippines

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 6:30 a.m. local time about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the village of Barcelona on the eastern side of Mindanao island.

Several people were asleep when the strong tremor shook them out of their beds.

The local seismological agency said the quake was not expected to cause damage.

In the municipality of Lingege, where Barcelona is located, local disaster official Ian Onsing said he was woken up by the quake.

“The quake was very strong. Things around were moving. I think the quake lasted about 10 to 15 seconds,” he told AFP by telephone. “So far there are no reports of casualties or damage. We are now monitoring the beaches for any violent movement.”

In the municipality of Hinatuan, about 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) north of Barcelona, ​​local disaster officer Jerome Ramirez saw the devices “moving for about 30 seconds” due to the strong shaking.

He also said there were no reports of injuries or damage to coastal communities in the area.

“We are now monitoring the possibility of aftershocks,” Ramirez told AFP by telephone.

The US Geological Survey said a series of aftershocks were felt in parts of Mindanao, the strongest of which measured 6.3 magnitude about 36 kilometres east of Barcelona.

“There are aftershocks here every two minutes, but we're happy it's not as strong as the earthquake this morning,” Onsing said.
