Uncovering North Dakota's Earthquake History and Future Risks

Uncovering North Dakota's Earthquake History and Future Risks

Earthquakes in North Dakota?

Come on, we've never had an earthquake in North Dakota before? That's what a lot of people think. I'll get to that in a bit.

We all know that places like California and Alaska are prone to earthquakes.

According to an article on Judy's website, the San Andreas Fault, which runs for hundreds of miles across California, is one of the most likely places to experience a devastating earthquake. The plates along the fault move only a few inches a year, but the friction can be enough to cause massive quakes. Most experts in the field believe it's not a matter of “if” but “when” California will experience another devastating earthquake.

Other states with the most seismic activity in the United States, besides California and Alaska, include Nevada, Hawaii, Washington state, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Oregon. All of the states in the West lie near the boundary between the North American and Pacific plates.

I myself experienced several earthquakes when I lived in California for a few years, and to be honest, I’m not sure if I ever felt anything. One such incident happened at work in Santa Barbara, California, when a coworker said to me, “Did you feel that?” He was across the room? Believe it or not, I didn’t. That’s how subtle some earthquakes are. Of course, they can be the exact opposite and really shake the room, too.

So, what about the states that have the fewest earthquakes?

Chances are you live in one of these states. It would have to be Florida and North Dakota. In fact, the last time we felt an earthquake in North Dakota was in 1975 and that was actually a Minnesota-centered earthquake. According to Infoplease, the last time we felt an earthquake in North Dakota with an epicenter in North Dakota would have to be in 1968. That was when the Huff Hills were “shaking.” A 4.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Huff, North Dakota, just south of Mandan.

Now, as you know, we do get earthquakes in North Dakota, but fortunately they're rare.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
