Father and son complete bike ride for earthquake survivors

A father and son have completed a 3,400-mile bike ride across Europe to raise money for earthquake victims.

Geoff Sherwood, 68, from Poole, Dorset, and his son Will, 29, began cycling on a 'reverse pilgrimage' in May, travelling from Cyprus to Canterbury.

The pair made the trip in aid of international charity Christian Aid and raised more than £5,000.

They were inspired by the charity's work supporting people in Turkey and Syria after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the two countries last year.

They met the leader of the Beysehir Cycling Club, who gave them cycling jackets.

Mr Sherwood said they cycle 60 miles a day with three days off.

“It's become a bit repetitive,” he said.

For his son, who now lives in Australia, the challenge has become a “good bonding experience,” he said.

“I think we discovered more about each other than we did in the past, but I think we got on each other's nerves too,” Mr. Sherwood joked.

Fundraisers had a planned route before the earthquake struck in February 2023.

The duo passed European landmarks and camped during their trip.

They met the leader of the Beysehir Cycling Club in Turkey, who gave them cycling jackets and helped them stay in a hotel for one night.

The fundraisers were scheduled to walk the trail before the February 2023 earthquake that devastated parts of Turkey and Syria.

This disaster killed more than 55,000 people.

Mr Sherwood and his son chose to support people affected by the earthquake because their route took them through Turkey, and was on the edge of the area affected by the earthquake.
