Magnitude 3.0 Earthquake Hits Los Angeles Area, Seismologists Say. 'I Felt It' | Wire

A 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Malibu, California, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

A 1/3-magnitude earthquake struck 13 miles from Malibu at 7:10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

About 20 people from as far away as Avalon and Thousand Oaks immediately reported to the agency that they felt the tremor.

“I felt this earthquake,” one person wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Malibu is located about a 30-mile drive west of downtown Los Angeles.

What you should know about earthquakes

The USGS says the magnitude scale measures the energy released by an earthquake's source. It replaces the old Richter scale.

According to the Michigan Institute of Technology, earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 to 5.4 are often felt by people but rarely cause significant damage. Most people rarely feel earthquakes with a magnitude of less than 2.5.

Sudden, rapid earthquakes can cause fires, tsunamis, landslides or avalanches. They can happen anywhere, but are most common in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Puerto Rico and Washington, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

If an earthquake strikes, it's best to protect yourself right away. Here are some tips from the experts:

—If you are in a car: Pull over to the side of the road. Set the parking brake.

– If you are in bed: Lie face down and cover your head with a pillow.

—If you are outside: Stay away from buildings, and do not go inside.

—If you are inside: Stay outside and do not run. Stay away from doorways.

Officials say the best way to protect yourself during an earthquake is to drop, cover and hold on to the ground.

“Wherever you are, get down on your hands and knees and hold onto something sturdy,” officials say. “If you use a wheelchair or walker with a seat, make sure your wheels are locked and stay seated until the shaking stops.”

Make sure your arms cover your head and neck, and crawl under a sturdy table if possible. If no shelter is available, crawl to an interior wall away from windows.

Once you place something under the table, officials say you should hold it with one hand and be ready to move it.

Officials say: “Serious hazards may occur after an earthquake, such as building damage, gas and water leaks, or downed power lines. Expect aftershocks after the main shock of the earthquake. Be prepared to drop, take cover and hold on if you feel an aftershock.”
