SunLive – Powerful 4.8 magnitude earthquake hits North Island

An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck the Cook Strait region on Monday evening, the World Meteorological Organization reported.

The short, sharp quake struck at 11:38 p.m. local time and was centered 15 kilometers southwest of Wellington at a depth of 13 kilometers, GeoNet said.

Earthquakes of this size in the Cook Strait are not unusual, National Weather Service science advisor John Restau tells Morning Report.

“The Cook Strait itself is full of faults that have been mapped by the National Institute of Tropical Oceanography, so earthquakes in this area are not at all uncommon.”

John says he felt the quake in the Upper Hutt area, although it wasn't as strong. Residents in the Bay of Plenty also reported feeling it.

“But I can imagine that the people in Wellington probably got a pretty good rattle.”

He said the first earthquake struck the area with a magnitude of 2.5 on the Richter scale, followed by another smaller aftershock.

The GeoNet website reported that the earthquake resulted in more than 17,000 reports from people who felt it.
