Philadelphia beats Dodgers after California earthquake

LOS ANGELES — Christopher Sanchez pitched six strong innings, Edmundo Sosa and Kyle Schwarber hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 on Tuesday night in a showdown between the top two teams in the National League.

An initial 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck in the middle of the seventh inning.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said the quake's epicenter was near Mettler, California, about 89 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

Philadelphia commentators said they didn't feel it in their box, but it was noticed in the control truck and in the press box at Dodgers Stadium.

There was no noticeable reaction from the crowd of 47,150 people.

Sanchez (8-7) allowed one run and five hits, struck out two and walked one to help end the Dodgers' three-game winning streak.

Schwarber hit an RBI single that knocked Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw (0-2) out of the game in the fifth inning and gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead.

After a double by Austin Hayes, Kershaw was able to get an 0-2 lead on Brandon Marsh before striking out to set up Schwarber.

In his third game of the season, Kershaw conceded one hit and five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He also struck out five batters without any runs.

Dodgers relief pitcher Bruce Graterol suffered a right hamstring injury that forced him out in the sixth inning, a day after coming off the 60-day injured list.

The Phillies attacked his replacement, Brent Honeywell.

They added three runs in the sixth.

Nick Castellanos had an RBI single and Sosa added a two-run single to make it 4-0.

The Dodgers scored their first run in the sixth inning on a groundout by Will Smith.

Trailing 4-1 in the seventh, Shohei Otani came to the plate as a potential tying run with runners on first and second bases, but substitute pitcher Matt Straham blew a groundout to right to end the inning.

Otani went 0-4.

Teoscar Hernandez, last month's Home Run Derby hero, hit his 25th home run against Jeff Hoffman in the eighth inning to lead the Dodgers to 4-2.

But Sosa led off in the ninth on an 0-2 ball from Honeywell that landed in the lower right-field seats.

Schwarber hit his 24th home run into the right upright to extend the lead to 6-2.

Dodgers right fielder Andy Pages made the best defensive save of the seventh inning.

He caught JT Realmuto's ball and launched it toward third base, where Kiké Hernández struck out Bryce Harper to complete the double play that ended the inning.

The Phillies lost their challenge to the invitation.

Dodgers' leading scorer Freddie Freeman hit his 500th career double in the first inning.
