5.2 magnitude earthquake hits California

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Tuesday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck at 9:09 p.m. Tuesday, 18 miles southwest of Bakersfield, and was felt across a wide swath of Southern California. More than a dozen aftershocks followed the initial quake, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

Data from the USGS showed a 99 percent chance of at least one more aftershock of magnitude 3 or greater. The probability of a magnitude 5 aftershock was 25 percent, while the probability of a magnitude 6 or greater aftershock was 3 percent.

Earthquakes were felt at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles during a baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies. Moderate earthquakes were felt in Irvine, lasting 1.1 seconds, and minor earthquakes were felt in Bakersfield (2.2 seconds) and Tehachapi (9.9 seconds), and there were weak earthquakes in Los Angeles, according to an initial summary posted by ShakeAlert.

Although no damage was reported, two lanes of southbound I-5 south of Grapevine Road were closed while emergency services removed a boulder from the roadway, ABC7 in Los Angeles reported. The network showed video of people running outside a local store when they felt the shaking before several items were thrown off shelves onto the ground.

“The site is at the southern end of the Central Valley, so it’s very close to where we had a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in 1952,” said seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones, a visiting fellow in geophysics at Caltech. “However, it doesn’t appear to be on the same fault as that earthquake.”

“This earthquake does not appear to be linked to any known fault, that is our initial assessment,” she added.

Jones described the aftershocks as a “very active series.”

Footage circulating on social media showed a ceiling-mounted light being moved back and forth.

Firefighters battling blazes in and around Kern County had to remove their equipment from earthquake-affected areas to prevent damage.

The Kern County Fire Department said firefighters were checking windshields of vehicles to assess damage in various areas.

Posted on X: “In accordance with Kern County Fire Department procedures, area firefighters have removed fire equipment from apparatus bays and will be conducting windshield surveys of their areas.”

This comes as California is still battling wildfires that have burned hundreds of thousands of acres so far this year.

The fire impacting Kern County is 49 percent contained, in the 2024 SQF Lightning Complex, east of Jonesdale in Tulare County, according to the latest update from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) on Monday.

The heavy rains covered 92,103 acres, began on July 13 and caused the closure of roads, trails and recreation sites.

This year, one civilian was killed in 4,886 fires that struck the state, and 1,026 buildings were destroyed.
