5.2 magnitude quake shakes businesses, causes minor damage to water lines

METTLER, Calif. (KERO – From Bakersfield – throughout Southern California – A 5.2 magnitude earthquake that started in Mettler has shaken residents.

Residents across the region received an alert seconds before the quake was felt. The USGS estimates that half a million people received the alert and that number is still rising. The data they get from the initial alert will help them improve and speed up their warning systems.

“This event had a series of strong aftershocks,” said Robert DeGroot, leader of the USGS Earthquake Alert Team.

With more than 300 aftershocks following the initial quake, damage was limited. The biggest impacts were a large rock that blocked parts of I-5 Tuesday night and a hazardous materials situation at the Sun Pacific Cuties facility. While both issues were addressed overnight, the Wheeler Ridge Maricopa Water Storage Area was left responding to multiple minor breaks in various lines.

Supervisor Greg Lovelace told me that although they were able to repair most of the damage from the initial quake, the amount of aftershocks had them responding throughout the morning with extra breaks.

DeGroot explained the data it was already able to collect from the earthquake.

The 1952 earthquake occurred on what's called the White Wolf Fault, he said. “But it's a coincidence that this event occurred on a fault we hadn't previously identified.”

“For this particular earthquake, we were able to get our first data set within about 7 seconds,” DeGroot said. “That was actually 7 seconds after the earthquake had started in the ground and we didn’t even know the earthquake was happening.”
