The US Geological Survey said the epicenter of the 5.2-magnitude quake was about 18 miles southwest of Bakersfield and about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

The quake struck at about 9:10 p.m. Pacific time, and was followed by dozens of aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 and less in the following minutes.

The Los Angeles Fire Department has activated “earthquake mode,” under which personnel from all 106 fire stations conduct a “strategic survey” to examine critical infrastructure.

The Los Angeles Metro said its trains will run slower in accordance with its earthquake procedures to check for any damage.

An hour after the Los Angeles Fire Department began its assessment, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the department had not reported “any damage or injuries in the city of Los Angeles.”

There were no immediate reports of major damage elsewhere, and the US Geological Survey forecast the quake's impact would likely be minimal.
